Chindaduangratn, C., Sittiprapaporn, W. and Kotchabhakdi, N. Auditory preattentive processing of Thai vowel change perception in consonant-vowel (CV) syllables Songklanakarin J. Sci. Technol., 2004, 26(6) : 773-778 Event-related potential (ERP) responses to infrequently presented spoken deviant syllables /pi/ among repetitive standard /pc/ syllables were recorded in Thai subjects who ignored these stimuli while reading books of their choices. The vowel across-category changes elicited a change-specific mismatch negativity response (MMN). The across-category change perception of vowels in consonant-vowel (CV) syllables was also assessed using low-resolution electromagnetic tomography (LORETA). The LORETA-MMN generator appeared in the left auditory cortex, emphasizing the role of the left hemisphere in speech processing already at a preattentive processing level also in CV-syllables.

Preattentive discrimination of across-category and within-category change in consonant-vowel syllable.

Event-related potentials to infrequently presented spoken deviant syllables /pi/ and /po/ among repetitive standard [see text] syllables were recorded in Thai study participants who ignored these stimuli while reading books of their choices. The vowel across-category and within-category changes elicited a change-specific mismatch negativity response. The across-category and within-category chan...

Effects of phoneme repertoire on phoneme decision.

In three experiments, listeners detected vowel or consonant targets in lists of CV syllables constructed from five vowels and five consonants. Responses were faster in a predictable context (e.g., listening for a vowel target in a list of syllables all beginning with the same consonant) than in an unpredictable context (e.g., listening for a vowel target in a list of syllables beginning with di...

Recognition of Tamil Syllables Using Vowel Onset Points with Production, Perception Based Features

Tamil Language is one of the ancient Dravidian languages spoken in south India. Most of the Indian languages are syllabic in nature and syllables are in the form of Consonant-Vowel (CV) units. In Tamil language, CV pattern occurs in the beginning, middle and end of a word. In this work, CV Units formed with Stop Consonant – Short Vowel (SCSV) were considered for classification task. The work ca...

Functional asymmetry and effective connectivity of the auditory system during speech perception is modulated by the place of articulation of the consonant- A 7T fMRI study

To differentiate between stop-consonants, the auditory system has to detect subtle place of articulation (PoA) and voice-onset time (VOT) differences between stop-consonants. How this differential processing is represented on the cortical level remains unclear. The present functional magnetic resonance (fMRI) study takes advantage of the superior spatial resolution and high sensitivity of ultra...

Auditory-evoked magnetic field codes place of articulation in timing and topography around 100 milliseconds post syllable onset

This study demonstrates by means of magnetic source imaging how consonants and vowels that constitute a syllable differently affect the neural processing within the auditory cortex. We recently identified a topographically separate processing for mutually exclusive place features in isolated vowels (Obleser et al., in press). Does this mapping principle also hold for stop consonants with differ...
